Gilchrist Unleashes Quickest IPL Ton

April 27, 2008

Adam Gilchrist has hammered the fastest century in the Indian Premier League to steer the Deccan Chargers to their first win of the tournament.

Gilchrist's 109 off just 48 deliveries included 10 sixes and nine fours and was the cornerstone of his team's crushing 10-wicket win over the Mumbai Indians, who are yet to open their account.

Andrew Symonds had scored a century off 47 balls the previous game but Gilchrist needed only 42 to register his at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.

The Indians made 7 for 154 after batting first with Dwayne Bravo and Abhishek Nayar each contributing 34.

Australia's Luke Ronchi managed 15 in falling to the bowling of RP Singh, who took 2 for 15 from four overs for the Chargers.

Deccan's reply was swift with Gilchrist and VVS Laxman (36 not out off 29) dismantling the Indians' attack.

Gilchrist punished Shaun Pollock (33 runs off two overs), dispatching the South African quick to all parts of the park once the fielding restrictions were released.

The former Australia wicket-keeper dealt almost exclusively in boundaries, with 96 of his runs coming in that fashion.

Gilchrist astonishingly reached his ton in just the tenth over as Laxman was merely reduced to a bystander, and the Chargers went on to record victory with 44 balls to spare.

In the evening's other game, the Kings XI Punjab overcame the Delhi Daredevils by four wickets with just three balls to spare in Mohali.

The Daredevils made 8 for 158 after electing to bat with Brett Lee taking 1 for 33 for the Kings XI.

Australian Simon Katich was the star of the show opening for the Kings XI, stroking 75 off 52 balls with 11 fours and a six as they reached 6 for 162 in reply.

Captain Yuvraj Singh finished unbeaten on 40 off 29 balls while Glenn McGrath took 1 for 29 off his four overs for the Daredevils.
